30 Days of Telly meme yoinked from Calapine, Day 2.

Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching: Well, by and large, TV shows are off the air by the time I hear about them, so I'll go with an old favorite.

Gilligan's Island. Oh, sure, people watch it - it's been running constantly in syndication since it was cancelled, and it's as much a part of our collective language as Star Wars - but it gets such a bad rap. It's the cleverest, best-written, best-acted, and cleanest comedy show in history, featuring one of the world's greatest comedy teams ever (I mean of course Alan Hale Jr and Bob Denver) and a good deal of hilarious social commentary that should give Terry Pratchett a run for his money, but what do people say about it? "[This other thing] was so bad I'd rather watch Gilligan's Island!"

*major eyeroll*

(Not to mention, it has Hamlet: The Opera. Which is pretty much the best abridgment of Shakespeare ever, no kidding. *wanders off singing "Neither a Borrower Nor a Lender Be"*)

I couldn't agree with your review of good ol' Gilligan more, I love that show. We bought a season of it on dvd and intend to get another, it's been so much fun having it on tap. And yes! Hamlet!! X-D

We own all three seasons on DVD - Amazon had some kind of special a couple years back and we bought them as Christmas presents for each other.

It's sort of mind-boggling to realize that whichever episode we want to watch, we can. Without going to the library and hoping it's on shelf. (I think the vampire!Gilligan ep has seen the most wear... we kids can all recite it pretty much word-for-word now! *g*)

Which season do you have?

Third - I don't remember how we ended up choosing that one, must have had some favorites on it that trumped the others at the time.

I used to watch Gilligan's Island as a kid when we had cable and TvLand...haven't seen it since then but at the time I thought it was really funny.:D
And I always liked the Millionaire and his wife.:P

Oh, yeah... I have a sister who thinks Thurston Howell III is just adorable. (Well, he is, in his own way. And Lovey is pretty darn fantastic too.)

That's half the magic of the show - they're all wonderful actors and amazing comedians. I don't think there've ever been seven such talented people working together anywhere else in the history of film.

(The other half of the magic, of course, is the incredibly cracktastic scripting. There's no fanfic for Gilligan's Island because nobody can match the quality of the original!)

We all love the Howells over here, they're so quirky and dignified and devoted to one another. I remember reading that the lady who played Lovey picked out most of those outrageous outfits herself and had a grand sense of humor. :-D

Yup - Natalie Schaefer was awesome. She was also... about eighty, or something. (Nobody really knows. She had a particular doctor do her checkups for her legally required certificate of health so she could act, and when he asked "how old are you?" she'd always say "how old was I last time?" hee hee!)

Anyway, if I'm half as cool as her when I hit eighty, I shall be doing very well, I think. :D
