250-word Meme from Eponymous_Rose

So I ganked this from
eponymous_rose, who made it up a few years back. I'm reading through her archives, because I'm bored and apparently Whovians all have fascinating LJ archives. ;-)
Multi-Fandom Fanfiction Meme (You had me at "multi-fandom". *g*)
1: Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.
Doctor Who (classic)
Legend
Man from UNCLE
Sapphire & Steel
Stargate SG-1
2: Visit this site to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and - you guessed it - list 'em in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)
"How long will ye pervert the right"
(I had to adapt the meme somewhat because I got a four-line poem, lol!)
"A voice said, Look me in the stars
And tell me truly, men of earth,
If all the soul-and-body scars
Were not too much to pay for birth."
"He asked with the eyes more than the lips"
"An' found myself in seven days of mostly atmosphere"
"I count the sash and bar"
3: I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting - make your brain explode!), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble - it's just inspiration.
4: Bravo! Have a cookie.
WELL! That was interesting... I find that I can't write a Sapphire & Steel half-drabble on a Robert W. Service prompt. It just won't. But here are the other four. I am deliberately not thinking about whether they are any good; half-drabbles aren't long enough for me to form a complete thought anyway.
Doctor Who: "How long will ye pervert the right" (Milton)
Long ago, someone told Jamie there are things which will destroy everything he believes in. They must be fought!
He can't remember who taught him that, but they were right. So Jamie always tries to fight against oppression and hatred and fear - to stand boldly and speak the truth.
Legend: "Tell me truly, men of earth, if all the soul-and-body scars were not too much to pay for birth" (Robert Frost)
Janos Bartok cares passionately about the people of his world. He wants them to succeed.
In that struggle, Bartok has fought too often against evil. His soul is scarred now beyond all healing. But he's clairvoyant: he knew the cost in advance.
He counts it a price well worth paying.
Man from UNCLE: "He asked with the eyes more than the lips" (Robert Frost)
Partners don't have to talk aloud on the job. A nod, a glance, a pointing finger communicate all that needs to be said. "Go that way", "Cover me", "Watch your back". And sometimes...
...when things have gone south and all that's left is completing the mission...
..."It's been an honor."
Stargate SG-1: "I count the sash and bar"
Jack's been in more prisons than, as the saying goes, you could shake a stick at. On Earth, off Earth, breaking out or just sitting around... he knows more jails than most people ever see. He could write a book.
'Course, then he'd have to shoot anyone who read it...

Date: 2010-08-19 06:34 pm (UTC)They tell me, those two, that I was in that place (whatever and wherever it was) for a week. I suppose they would know.
But I tell you: when I was there, no way out and nothing around me but the air to breathe, it felt a whole lot longer.
